The smut is a tiny black fly like a midge with a fat thorax.
It looks like a tiny black gnat

I think that the reed smuts don`t range in Bulgaria. They are unidentified here.

The above link will take you to the tiny black fly
Simuliidae are smuts. they are VERY small.
Smut is also soot from a fire. I suppose the flies are called smuts, because they arrive in clouds like tiny soot from the chimney.

Unfortunately smut in English also means illicit sex - in books and stories  ,
so a search for smut on the internet can strange results.
If you wish to search, then search on Reed Smut Simuliidae

Sorry it took so long to find

Roy

Hi, Roy,
thanks again , for helping us with everything you post.
So, these blood feeding insects are the smuts. Some humans and animals have a severe reaction, so they are dengerous creaters, or not?
First I thought the smuts are those little insects flying above the mountain lakes, but may be I make a misttake, taking them for backsweemers "boatmen".
Thanks a lot and best to you my friend!
Rado

Ehehe, Roy, you have got nice sense of humour.
Well, I am always asking myself a questin: Are not the little tinny flies, over #18 one and the same? Is it possible for the fish to find difference, between, for excample, smuts, black gnuts, spiders, moskuitos, when they are too little?
The least fly I've ever tried is #18, a midg, and I don't know what is going on with the less patterns.

Tight lines and Best my friend!
Rado

Hi, Rado,

I think the fish get VERY close to the fly and have GOOD eyesight.
They can find a size 18 in white water!
I believe they can easily see the difference between patterns.

Other people may of course think differently. 8) thats OK by me.

Whether it matters that they see any difference - I cannot be sure.
They take different patterns in different conditions of calmness and lighting
- and depending what insects are present in and on the water.
Which patterns they will find most attractive is our game as anglers.

I believe that the hardest test is to fish the fly without action in flat calm.
They are easily caught on tiny hare's ears, fished with action.

Anyways it does keep us busy when the fishing season is closed, so that is good for the fly tier. We can stay home with the Bushmills Whiskey to keep us warm.

Cheers, Roy

Well, a friend of mine was telling: the fish is not blind. I see

You mean to avoid the "V" skating of the fly, right?
It might be nice to be in a pub in Tullamore, to take two glasses of Daniel Williams sweet liquid, for example, what do you think?
Cheers,
Rado

Yes, I agree that is essential. ' to avoid the "V" skating of the fly'
Sorry, I was unclear. I meant nymph.........
what I meant was the best test for the fly is to present it to the fish dead drift.
If you fish a nymph on a sunk tippet, there should be no wake or 'V'
The best fly is the one that does not need to be animated (moved) by the angler, to get the fish to take it.
They will take a bare hook if you put it on their noses and twitch it.
To get them to take a free drifting nymph is harder, also it is harder to see.

That is why old people like me like to fish dry fly.

Hi everyone,
Hope you all had a good season.

WARNING

I haven't bothered to open the above link as it appears to be a pornographic clip

I have heard it is educational though
