Hi Glen!

I'm interested in your red spider from your avatar. I'm impressed from its simplicity and fine proportins. You probably fish it like wet fly - please, shared with us the technique you use. I have question about the hook size also. Is that fly suitable every season?
I've done something mad with your spider -i tied it on ''mourmiska'' - the russian hook for ice fishind and will check it this weekend. Will report for result

I do fish the spider like a wet fly. very deep during the drift with a slight bump or just a small strip let rest then bump it again. I try to imitate a struggling insect or emerger. I do fish it year round , however, it seems to work best in spring and fall. Try varying the pattern by using black or a caddis green thread. I like to dress the fly sparsely it seems to work better and looks " Buggier" than over dressing them. you can also subsitute fur dubbing for the peacock herl as a thorax. I tie them on a scud or caddis larvae hook. The one in my avatar is on a size 18 TMC 2487. You can use a Mustad 3906 or 3906b if you would like a longer looking body. For me I prefer the shorter shank.
I would love to see your version of it tied on the Russian hook.
